Official Android 2.3 Gingerbread Tips and Tricks

Announced at the beginning of the month, Google's Android 2.3 Gingerbread mobile platform is barely making its way on the market. Currently, there's only one smartphone available on the market, which is delivered with Android OS 2.3 out-of-the-box, the Nexus S.

To raise Gingerbread's awareness Google decided to give Android fans an insight of its last iteration of the mobile platform, by posting a high number of tips and tricks.

Several of these tips are specific to Android 2.3, while others are present on older versions of the mobile operating system, as well.

When it comes to keyboard use, Android 2.3 offers a few useful tweaks that make it easier to type, such as capitalizing a word. Users can press and hold Shift and Key to capitalize a certain letter, instead of changing the keyboard's mode to 'All caps'.

The 'auto-complete' feature enables users to finish a word with a single click. When the feature is available the 'space bar' key lights up.

Furthermore, to replace a certain word with another one, users can tap on the word and then click on any of the suggested words. This feature is called Quick replace.

To access special characters users can press and hold any key to go to the special character keyboard or press and hold the ',' key to get to a more extensive punctuation keyboard.

Android 2.3 introduces something called Visual cue for scrolling. This means that when you're at the bottom of a list that has just scrolled, you will get an orange hue meaning that you cannot scroll anymore.

Copy/paste from a webpage is now easier, as users only need to press and hold their finger on a text and drag the cursors around the text they want to copy and then press in the highlighted square. To paste the selected text simply press a text entry and select paste. However, this does not apply for Gmail where users have to go to Menu / More / Select text.

The notification bar icons will now turn green when users have an unrestricted connection to Google, otherwise they will be white.

As a side note, Wi-Fi bars won't turn green until the user launches the browser and gets past the captive portal.

Following the recent Google Maps upgrade, users will not be able to look at the maps in 3D. The Walk feature can be initiated by clicking on the walking person icon to get walking direction.

Stay tuned for more Android 2.3 Gingerbread tips and tricks.

Nokia n8 longer battery life and power saving method

we all know there are many features in the n8 increases the power consumption and thereby shorten the battery life. To save battery power, please note the following:

1. always be a battery fully charged (until the battery full power notifications or the battery status bar stops scrolling and remain at full power, and the charge indicator turns off).
2. start the power save mode. Press the power key, and then select start a power-saving mode.
3, change the mailbox synchronization frequency. Select function table > application > mailbox, your mailbox and option > settings, and then select the synchronization frequency settings.

7. close the large clock screen saver. Select the function table > > > topics mode set screen saver pattern > No.
8, if you start to use Bluetooth technology functions, or when using other features allow such features to run in the background, you will increase the power consumption of the device. To extend the device work time, please do not need to use the Bluetooth technology turned off when
(Feature table > settings > > > Bluetooth Connectivity Bluetooth = off).
9, require the use of wireless local area network (WLAN) feature increases the power consumption. When you try to connect, is not connected to another access point, or does not scan for available networks, Nokia device WLAN function will be shut down.
10, to further reduce power consumption, you can specify the device does not scan in the background or as little as possible to scan for available networks. In the background scan batch period, WLAN feature is turned off. When setting the function table > > > > WLAN connectivity option > settings > show WLAN connectivity status is set to never, the standby does not show WLAN connection status icon. However, you can still manually scan for available as usual WLAN network and connect to a WLAN network.
11. If you have connection settings grouped data connection settings for where available, and you do not support packet data connection (GPRS) network service area, the device periodically attempts to establish a packet data connection, causing the battery power increase. To extend the working hours of the device, select the function table > > > connection feature set management settings > > packet data packet data connection > when needed.
Ovi 12, map application you scroll to a new area on the map when you download the new map information, this will increase the power consumption. Through the PC will be required for map data downloaded to your device, you can avoid automatic download map data.
13. If your region the signal strength of the cellular network unstable, your device will need to repeatedly scan for available networks. This situation increases the power consumption. If the network settings in the network mode is set to dual mode, the device will search for UMTS networks. If the UMTS network service is not available, the device will use the available GSM network. To only use the GSM network, select the function table > settings > > > network connectivity network model > GSM.
14, screen backlight increases the power consumption. To change the screen background lighting of the wait time before shutdown, select set feature table > > > > screen cell phone screen backlight timeout. 18, installed a third-party applications may consume additional power. If you install the application, I found the increase in electricity consumption, and no longer need this application, you can uninstall it.
19, AMOLED screen on the device's display white will consume more power. Therefore, white heavier topics mode (for example, wallpaper images) may be larger than other topics mode consumes more power.
20, connect to the Internet, using a WLAN connection, instead of packet data (GPRS or 3G) connection.
21, when you listen to music, and you don't want to make or receive telephone calls, please start the offline scenario mode.
22, we recommend that you use the Nokia device sales package contains a Nokia battery charger (AC-15). This charger for your Nokia device battery is optimized.

[TUTORIAL] Opera Mobile 10 - Secret settings & memory mods

Opera Mobile 10 Beta has stormed into our Symbian world providing us an amazing user experience but recent reports on the N97 are not so favorable due to the low memory effects but here is a tweak that could be used to manually configure OM to give you a little extra notch.

On the url box type opera:config

Now Opera Mobile will open some wonderful hidden screens. Here you have lots of configuration options, there are two of special interest; the first one is “disk cache” under this one you will find an option called “size” changing this from the default 4096 to 2048 seems to have a positive impact in N97´s memory usage:

Change it to 2048 from the standard default

Now go on and type opera:drives and you’ll see you’ll be able to use Opera Mobile 10 Beta as kind off a bare bones utility task manager.

Again you can try these settings on any S60 device but they’ll have a higher mileage on the s60v5

[Tips And Tricks] Optimizing Opera Mini 5 ( Part 1 : Speed )

Out of my boredom, I decided to write some tips and info’s about OM5. The browser I usually send my friends through bluetooth. Today’s post focuses on Opera Mini 5’s Speed.

1. Browser Boot Up.
This refers to the time the java app takes until it is fully launched. This differs through various cellphone OS/units. In my experience with my N70, handler apps with settings windows on start increases the delay. So a mild fix I found was to install the midlet in phone memory.
2. Page Load Time.
This now refers to how fast OM5 renders a page. Of course, it depends on the page size, the bigger, the slower.
Things you can do: input in address bar opera:config and set everything to “NO” except “fit text to screen” option, then save. Set image quality to medium or low for a not-quality based browsing. Set protocol to SOCKET when it is available and working for you. Switch to UMTS or Dual Mode if your phone can and your network provides it.
3. File System Access.
This refers to the time it takes you accessing your file system (uploading/downloading). Of course, the lesser pop up’s, the faster. This is solved by using a signed OM or maybe h4cking through phones security. It dependes on phone unit. Least I forget, the downside of OM5, it dont remembers previously accessed path..
These are just among simple things and info’s you might know or might not know. Hope you learned something.

how to download jar file in nokia s40 phones Using Uc Browser

Many times we want to download jar files in nokia s40 phone not using its default browser as it install it in the games folder. It may not be a problem but it may cause some like if you have less phone memory you can not
install new app or since your phone memory is low you can not download new app. To remove these you want to download jar and jad files to your memory card. But you can not use nokia browser to download and not many browser even opera mini can download jar file.So how you do it.

Here's the trick

1.first install ucweb browser.(you can  find it in this site)
2.download the file. it will rename the .jar file to _jar file.now close the ucweb.
3.move the file where you want to be by using phone move option and then rename the _jar to .jar using phone rename option. Please make sure there is no dot ( . ) before the .jar an .

The other problem you may face is .ext extension in jar file. You can not do anything with it.You can not rename it to .jar file nor you can use any app to rename it to .jar file as nokia phone dont allow it.so there is a simple trick for that.actually you can use it to any file which by default save in .ext.

1.first you have to know the real extension of file like .zip .jar etc.(i bet you already know as you downloaded it).

2. download blue ftp app.open it and rename the file. delete .ext extention and replace it with the real extension with _ symbol before it. ex nokiapp.ext to nokiapp_jar.

3.  this step is simple just use nokia rename option to remove "_ "to "." Your work is done.

if you have any query feel free to comment. i will try to remove it.

Convert touch java games to Nokia 5800 fullscreen *easy fix*

OK, here is a short and simple tutorial of how to make touchscreen java games fit to your nokia 5800 360X640 screen...

First of all, you need to find a java game with touch capabilities. Note that java games from HTC threads, or SE G900 UIQ3 threads work just fine, but display on the screen is very small. A good start to search for some games

After you download the .jar file, left click on it, and open it with a decompression tool (winrar, winzip, etc). Inside the file, go to the META-INF folder, and open the MANIFEST.MF file with notepad.

Below the last line inside the MANIFEST.MF file (REMEMBER NOT TO LEAVE ANY LINE BLANK), just copy and paste the following lines:

A. For completely fullscreen stretched game size:
-------------------------------------------
Nokia-MIDlet-Original-Display-Size: 240,320
Nokia-MIDlet-Target-Display-Size: 360,640
-------------------------------------------

B. For max game size, without the graphics beeing distorted:
-------------------------------------------
Nokia-MIDlet-Original-Display-Size: 240,320
Nokia-MIDlet-Target-Display-Size: 360,480
-------------------------------------------

Optionally, if you dont want the virtual keypad to display on the screen when running the game, just add this line:
-------------------------------------------
Nokia-MIDlet-On-Screen-Keypad: no
-------------------------------------------

Save the file MANIFEST.MF after editing, and exit the decompression tool.

Your Fullscreen touch-enabled game is ready for installation!

NOTE:
This method applies for JAVA games intended for devices with original screen resolution 240X320. If you find a JAVA game from a device with different resolution, just change the values respectively in ways A. and B.

Bluetooth Connection Guide For Symbian S60

This is a "How To" for Connecting the Nokia Series 60 device (Nokia 7650, 6600, 3650, 3660 etc...) via Bluetooth TM with the Windows Widcomm software used by TDK, Billington, MSI and others Bluetooth USB Vendors. The guide was created with the 7650 hadset but the steps are similar for other Series 60 devices and have been checked with the 3650 and 6600.

1.Pairing the computer and the Series 60 Handset
Pairing is the process of swapping pass keys and setting up a trusted connection between the Bluetooth USB adapter / card connected to the PC and the 7650 handset. Save any files and close any applications you may have been working on.

2. Set up Bluetooth TM on the 7650 by going to the Main Menu, selecting Connect and then Bluetooth.

3. Make sure the Bluetooth option is On and My Phone's Visibility is Shown to all. Remember what is in My Bluetooth Name - or edit it to one of your choice - this is what your 7650 will be seen as by other Bluetooth TM devices.

4. Right Click on the Bluetooth Icon in the system tray, on the menu that appears go to Setup and then click on Security.

5. A window appears and all being well the right hand pane will have your 7650 (titled what ever you have entered into the phone's My Bluetooth Name entry). If nothing appears click Refresh and your phone should then appear. Highlight the 7650 and click Execute Pairing.

6. A window will pop up asking for a PassKey. Enter in a numeric only passkey and click OK.

7. On the 7650 a screen pops up asking you to enter a passkey - key in the same number you just typed into the PC.

8. By default any connections from your PC to the 7650 must be manually accepted on the 7650. You have an option to set up a connection from the PC to your 7650 as authorized, this means when you connect from the PC to the phone it won't ask you if it's ok and will connect automatically.

9. To set it as automatic: On the 7650 in the Bluetooth TM Setting Screen, you joystick right to the Paired Devices screen, highlight the Computer you just paired with and press Options, select Set as Authorized and Yes. You will then see a padlock icon beside the paired device - this device will no longer require manual authorization for connections to the 7650.

Now you should set My phone's visibility to Hidden - so that unknown devices searching won't see your phone. You can still be connected to by any paired devices. Remember to switch it to Visible if you want to pair with a new device or receive a file / business card from someone with an unpaired device.

Nokia SYMBIAN TIPS & TRICKS

Handy Tips
- At the top of the main-menu and every folder, the keys 1 to 9 are shortcuts to the icons 1-9

- A shortcut on the left menukey in standby-mode will take more time to open than a shortcut on the right menukey. Reason: The left key is also used for the keylock so it shortly waits for pressing the * button.

- While writing text press and hold "#" to switch between Alpha mode and Number mode. You can also press a key long to insert its number.

- In standby-mode, press and hold 0 to launch your wap home page.

- If you have your keylock activated just press the on/off button to turn on your backlight to look at the time when it's dark without having to unlock the keypad.

- To keep the backlight on, run Torch (freeware), press and hold the Menu button and go somewhere else on the phone.

- To check your current firmware version simply type *#0000# in standby screen.

- To check your IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) type *#06# in standby screen.

- To check your Bluetooth device address type *#2820# in standby screen.

- Start up in Safe Mode (no 'auto start' apps will be running): Hold down the pencil key when you turn on the phone and hold it on until you have to enter your PIN code.

- Format the phone memory by typing *#7370# in standby screen.

- In standby mode,

45# + dials the number on your sim in memory slot 45.

50# + dials slot 50 and so on.
Speed Up Your Phone
First go to your To-do List (default app of your Phone)

- Make a note and input as follows

Subject: Speed

Due Date: 01-29-2005(mm-dd-yy)

Priority: set to High

then press Done

- Make a second Note and input as follows

Subject: Qoukie

Due Date: 01-29-2005(mm-dd-yy)

Priority: set to Low

then press Done

- Do not exit yet, Press the Option of your Subject note w/c is Speed and Mark as done

- then Press the Option of your Subject note w/c is Qoukie and Mark as done

- Now, reboot your mobile.
 Increase Your MMC Space
Your files in MMC are stored in multiple (disk) blocks.
So if you format using 16K block, the space used will be 16K eventhough your file is just 1K.

If you buy MMC, it is usually preformatted with 16K block. Therefore alot of space is wasted as most installed program files are usually less than 2K.

You will need a card reader to do this:-

1. Connect card reader and copy all your files in the MMC to computer disk. (Make sure you set the show all/hidden/os files to "on")

2. Do a format of the MMC using command line "format" and use the /A=size option.

Alternative, you can use the Disk Management in Adminstrative Tools to format. Make sure you select FAT. For 256MB MMC, smallest block you can use is 4K, 128MB is 2K, 64Mb is 1K and 32MB is 512B.

(Note: You cannot use the phone "format MMC" to do this as the format just clear the allocation table and does not change the block size)

3. Copy back all files to MMC.

Now you will find that you will have more space.
256mb MMC got back 30+ mbs

How to format your S60 phone.

It may happens that a program corrupts the C: drive of your phone. In such case, some data can be lost of course but, more annoying, some applications may not work or work only partially...

On a Series 60 based phone, two key sequences will allow to restore your phone to a cleaner state:

Normal Reset *#7780# : Restores ini files from rom but preserves user data (photos, 3rd party apps etc)

Hard Reset *#7370# : This reformats completely the C: drive. All applications and files stored on this drive will be lost and clean default files will be rewritten.

In both case, the phone will ask you a confirmation and you will have to enter a security code (12345 by default).

5. After a few minutes when the Full phone formatting completed, your 6600 will back to original system and factory settting.
How to copy and paste text
